How do GCSE maths boards label their topic references?
A concise guide to what the cited material establishes about AQA 8300, Pearson Edexcel 1MA1 and OCR J560 — and where the available evidence stops.

What the cited report can support
The comparison below describes the consulted sources. An unknown or inferred item should not be read as a confirmed feature of a board’s full specification.
AQA · 8300
Letter-prefixed areas
The synthesis lists six broad areas and reference prefixes: Number (N), Algebra (A), Ratio, proportion and rates of change (R), Geometry and measures (G), Probability (P) and Statistics (S). [1]
Evidence limit. The cited excerpt cuts off while discussing Probability. Statistics and S are inferred in the report, not explicitly quoted, so the complete six-area list is not fully verified. The report does not establish the source’s publication or update date, Foundation / Higher differentiation, or a subtopic breakdown. AQA’s source currency cannot be independently verified from the cited page.
Pearson Edexcel · 1MA1
Tiered exam-aid material
The consulted exam aid is valid for the 2025 Assessment Window. It covers Foundation and Higher tiers and provides a formula sheet for each tier. [2]
The other cited Pearson item is a post-16 scheme of work. [3] Together, these sources identify the qualification reference and support materials, but they are not the complete 1MA1 specification.
Evidence limit. The report does not establish the specification’s topic headings or detailed hierarchy. A numbered-section structure is not verified by the consulted sources; the complete specification was not consulted.
OCR · J560
Numbered sections and statements
OCR GCSE (9–1) Mathematics is qualification number 601/4606/0 and is reported as offered from 2015. [4][5] The cited update uses numbered sections and statement references: its supported example is Section 4, statement 4.01c, on approximation and estimation. [5]
The report says Higher-tier content for statement 4.01c is assessed from November 2026. [5]
Evidence limit. Only that example is established here. The complete section and code hierarchy, and whether a formula sheet is provided, are not established in the report.
Reading the comparison
Treat the gaps as gaps.
These sources do not support a complete side-by-side topic map. In particular, the Pearson materials do not confirm topic headings, AQA’s cited excerpt is incomplete, and OCR’s report gives one coded example rather than the whole hierarchy.
The report’s suggestion that the boards likely cover shared core GCSE areas, and its suggestion that their structures reflect different pedagogical or assessment preferences, are assumptions. They are not presented here as verified facts.
This overview summarizes structural findings only; it does not reproduce question banks or full specification text.
